Dhondutai Kulkarni, perhaps the last living icon of the Jaipur-Atrauli school of music. The legendary, Ustd. Alladiya Khan, who not only founded the gharana, but is also known for its full-throated singing, its complicated taans and its vast repertoire of raagas.
She was born in Brahmin family in the in the state of Kolhapur, Dhondutai's father initiated her into music. She became an AIR performing artiste at the age of eight! She started training under Ustad Burji Khan, Whose father, Ustad Alladiya Khan, had a special soft corner for the Dhondutai, and it was not uncommon to find her sitting next to the legendary performer at music festivals.
Dhondutai was born on 23rd July 1927, in the home of a Brahmin family in the then princely state of Kolhapur. An avid lover of music, her father insisted on her training under the best gurus from a very young age. Indeed, Dhondutai soon became a child artiste, performing on All India Radio at the age of eight. Her training continued under the mentorship of Laxmibai Jadhav. Thereafter, she spent a long number of years under the immense Kesarbai Kerkar, ending up as her sole disciple.
Dhondutai's training then continued under the mentorship of Laxmibai Jadhav and then the immense Kesarbai Kerkar, ending up as her sole disciple. Over the years, she has remarkably managed to consolidate the teachings of all these artistes. Her incredible repertoire of ragas sees to it that she rarely repeats a raga at two consecutive concerts. At 74, Dhondutai is saluted not just for her musical contributions...
Dhondutai has been awarded the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1990.
