Frank Sinatra " The Voice"

Dec 12, 1915 - May 14, 1998

Frank Sinatra (1915-1998), ranks among the most famous singers in the history of popular music. Nickname "The Voice," he became well known for both his soulful ballad singing and his interpretations of rhythm songs. Since he made his motion-picture debut in 1941, he has appeared inmore than 50 films. He won the 1953 Academy Award as best male supporting actor for his work in From Here to Eternity.

Frank Sinatra " The Voice"Francis Albert Sinatra was born in Hobroken, N.J., the son of a fire fighter . He sang with local bands and won an amateur show prize in 1937 before joing trumpter Harry James' band in 1939. While touring with the band of trombonist Tommy Dorsey from 1940 to 1942, he gained great popularity with the teen-agers throughout the United States. Sinatra began his career as a solo singer in 1943, and later gained popularity with audiences of all ages. He was mobbed every where he went and was a huge success. Then in 1952 after his career took a nose dive and he almost committed suicide then, his vocal cords hemoriged, he fought back and won the coveted role of Maggio in "From Here to Eternity" (1953). He won an Oscar for the part and his career was assured from then on. He was to continue to give strong and memorable performances in such films as "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "Suddenly" (1954) and, especially, "The Manchurian Candidate" (1962) probably his best film. For the rest of the 1960s, he concentrated on less-serious roles, playing hard-boiled private eyes and hamming it up with his Rat Pack buddies Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Of his later films "The Detective" (1968) and "Ocean's Eleven" (1960) are the best. His last lead role was as the aging detective in "The First Deadly Sin" (1980). In it, he gave a moving performance that was a fitting finale to a long and rich career.

Sinatra's life was recounted in the remarkably honest and accurate miniseries "Sinatra" (1992), featuring Phillip Casnoff in the title role. It was a well-acted and intriguing look into Frank's life. The best part, of course, was the music. Dozens of vintage Sinatra recordings were used, along with re-created performances voiced by Frank Sinatra, Jr. and Australian actor Tom Burlinson. This surprisingly touching and eloquent elegy was executive produced by Frank's daughter Tina. It is an excellent production that anyone with a fondness for Sinatra will enjoy.

Frank Sinatra " The Voice"In the last years of his life, Sinatra settled into a quiet, comfortable role as a living legend, a forbidding king who lived in his palace on high (in his case, Beverly Hills), only occasionally descending below to mingle among his subjects, usually to accept some award or tribute. His career as a performer, unfortunately, was over. It should be noted, though, that at his televised 80th birthday celebration, Frank belted out a few lines from "New York, New York" and all but blew away the assembled throng of singers on stage, such was the power and precision of his voice. Even at 80, the Voice was still the best. Sinatra was still The Man.

On May 14, 1998, Frank Sinatra died of a heart attack at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. The outpouring of grief, love, and admiration was almost astounding. No one deserved it more. Frank was a truly larger-than-life figure, a legend of nearly all-surpassing greatness. The world will never know his kind again. As long as we have his music, though, Frank Sinatra will never really die. He will certainly never be forgotten.
