The Outlaws became country music's first million-seller. The media soon labeled all musicians who recorded in Texas as Outlaws, But the group had never had a distinctive style of music. What these performers had in common was that they were revolting against the heavy - string arrangements that made almost every Nashvillie record of the time sound alike.

The Outlaws' scruffy appearance - their beards and long hair - recalled the Old West and further enhanced their status as rebels against the country - music establishments.
